How woman made it in Media

July 16, 2011

This morning I attended a dialogue session held by Women’s Register, “How woman made it in media”

The panelists were Pat Law, Irene Ang, Sabriner Zuber, Debra Soon.

I believe this is God’s timely birthday gift for me, in providing some of the best in the industry to share about their insights and learnings.

Personally I am inspired by Pat Law’s story of how she started at age 20, at the lowest level without any speaking rights. Thereafter, she move up the ladder and worked in Oigilvy and then to her own company Goodstuph. Without a university degree, every step she took was hard work and dedication in the things she do. She is now a well known personality in the Communications Industry in Singapore. Despite her successs, she remains humble and is generous in imparting her knowledge. It’s heartening to know that beneath that rockstar image is someone who cares for her family and making her parents proud.

Irene Ang, started FLY entertainment at age 29 with $2000 (all that she have in her bank). It was a bold move from the stable finance industry to the volatile media industry. She has since managed a successful artist management company with artist like Adrian Pang, Chua En Lai and many others under her wing.

Through these successful women in the industry, I understand the importance of being grounded and constantly improving my craft. Success cannot be microwaved. While reading books helps in giving insights nothing beats the physical experience that comes with time and commitment to the things that we are doing.

Do I keep trying to cross the hurdle when i fail or make a U TURN when the going gets tough? Too many young people quit easy when they don’t receive the result they want to see.

Hence, i resolute to not be a quitter but a fighter. Attempting, making mistakes, taking the humble pie, and learn.

It’s not about the age, the academic achievements but the attitude that makes all the different to make it work in this Media industry.

Dream Big, Start Small, Build Deep, says Irene Ang.

I delight

I delight in the moments where I can sit back and enter into his rest.

No better way to sum up all that is in my heart than Brooke Fraser’s “Day is Dimming”

“The day is dimming and I’m yearning for you
I won’t be satisfied till I see your face
Every victory, every loss
Every tick and every cross
You can put them all in place

It seems I’m finding more of why
In these moments
I feel like I’m made to sing of how good you are
The more the years swell by and pass
Each second more than last
It’s true by far

That no profound thought or clever rhyme
No soaring grand, melodic line
No theory, philosophy or sign
Can explain it
Can explain

Where you are, I wanna be
It’s your love that has changed me
I’d give the world, and all it’s charms
For a moment in your arms
Better is one day with you
Than a thousand elsewhere *
A thousand elsewhere….

Where you are, I wanna be
It’s your love that has changed me
I’d give my life, to honor you
In whom I live
In whom I move
Better is one day with you
Than a thousand elsewhere
A thousand elsewhere…. “
